My Story

I’m Adwapa, a birth doula and a certified placenta encapsulation expert. I also wear many other hats – I’m a mother, a wife, a Spelman Woman, a sister, a daughter, and a friend. As a family and community-oriented person, I’m extremely passionate about supporting other families and creating a safe and calm birth environment.

In 2019, less than a year into my marriage, I found out I was pregnant while taking care of my very sick father. I knew nothing about my body and what it meant to be pregnant, but my husband and I were over the moon at the prospect of being new parents. The rumored horrors of diaper blowouts and sleepless nights paled in comparison to the delight of peals of laughter bouncing off our walls and the pitter patter of little feet running around the house.

Sadly, it was not to be. We lost the baby at 21 weeks. And we were devastated and angry. How could my body fail me? Over the next several months, I threw myself into research and endeavored to educate myself on why it happened and how to improve our chances the next time around.

I was also fortunate enough to find genuine friends and mentors who poured into my life. It was my desire to have a different, empowering experience that led me to learn more about my cycle, my body, energy work and eventually, consciously, we conceived our daughter Frema who came into this world at 32 weeks via an emergency c-section. It was then that everything in my life seemed to fall into place. Three months later, I enrolled in a doula training program.

How I work

I am a firm believer in the wonder and power of our bodies to birth and nurture new life in this world. At the same time, I understand that it is a deeply personal and unique experience for each person and everyone approaches birth with their own needs, abilities, stories, and hopes. As your doula, I meet you at your point of need, championing your cause and promoting your development, so that you may have the most positive pregnancy and birthing experience possible.

My goal is to develop a personal relationship with you, learn your story and support you without pressure or judgment. This shapes the care that I give and allows me to provide individualized support that is specific and culturally relevant to your preferences during your special birth.

I believe every person should be given the opportunity to have the labor and birth experience they desire. I am committed to listening to and helping families articulate their wishes to achieve exactly that.
